The cost of live-in care and advice about possible sources of financial help

Care in your own home may cost less than residential care

It may come as a surprise to you, but the cost of live-in care in your own home generally compares very favourably with the cost of residential care. In many cases, live-in care will actually work out more reasonable, especially if the care home you have in mind is located in an exclusive area, or if care is being considered for a couple.

Might you be eligible for financial help?

Attendance Allowance

If you are not already doing so, you should look into claiming Attendance Allowance. This is a State Benefit payable to anyone whose ability to keep safe or look after their own personal care is affected by physical or mental illness or disability. There are two weekly rates, depending on whether the person needs help in the day or at night, or if they need help both in the day and at night.

For a full list of State Benefits which those with care needs might be entitled to, visit this website:

Local Authority

You may also wish to contact your local authority to see if you might be entitled to any financial help from them towards the cost of your care. You will need to ask them to carry out a Care needs assessment.

NHS Continuing Health Care

If you require full-time care on health grounds, you may be eligible for funding from NHS Continuing Health Care. In many cases this could cover the entire cost, including personal care, nursing care and any costs associated with adapting your home to take account of your health condition.
